ANSWERS · BRAND BUILDING

What does building a brand actually involve?

Definitions vary. Our view is that brand building means consciously improving every touchpoint through which consumers experience a brand, including the product, service and operations as well as marketing.

Is there one definition of brand building?

There is no single agreed definition. Our view is broader than marketing: brand building is the conscious work of improving every touchpoint through which consumers experience a brand.

A touchpoint is any encounter with the business or its offer. It can involve the product itself, a shop or website, delivery, customer service or a communication. In a small business, one person may be responsible for several of these.

The American Marketing Association defines a brand through the features that identify and distinguish an offer, and notes the associations attached to it. Our definition of brand building describes the work of shaping the whole experience around that offer. AMA brand definition

What decisions does brand building involve?

Brand building involves decisions about what the business offers, who it serves and how each encounter expresses and delivers its intended promise. The practical scope reaches beyond the name and visual identity.

For a founder, that can include product choices, the ease of buying, delivery arrangements and how the team handles problems. These are operating decisions that consumers experience directly, even when nobody labels them marketing.

The priority depends on the business and the evidence. A difficult purchase process and an unclear proposition call for different work. Strategy, name or logo examines how those decisions can develop together without a fixed starting document.

Does every touchpoint need the same treatment?

No. Each touchpoint has a different purpose, while contributing to the experience people associate with the same brand. Consistency concerns the promise and standard of the experience, as well as its appearance.

An enquiry, a purchase and a service problem involve different consumer needs. Repeating the same message or visual treatment everywhere may leave those needs unanswered.

Improvement means making each encounter work better for the people using it and for the business delivering it. What that involves depends on the offer, consumer expectations and available resources; a more elaborate experience is not automatically a better one.

Where can AI help with brand building?

AI can organise research, explore alternatives and develop materials for different touchpoints. It can also compare proposed work with the brand brief and identify unsupported claims or inconsistencies.

Useful inputs include confirmed product information, actual customer questions and an accurate account of how the business operates. AI can help reveal gaps between the intended experience and the information supplied, but cannot observe an experience it has not been given evidence about.

With a clear brief and careful review, AI can expand the options a small team can examine. The founder or team still assesses whether the proposed work fits the brand and can be delivered in practice.
